I tried to make Konpeitō, candy from 460 years ago
#FXPartner Inspired by the new series, FX's Shōgun, I made Japanese candy called Konpeitō (こんぺい糖)! FX’s Shōgun premieres Feb. 27 on Hulu, New Episode every Tuesday! @FXNetworks
I was inspired by FX's Shōgun series to make Konpeitō, the candy that is believed to have been brought by Portuguese missionaries around the Sengoku era, about 460 years ago, the same time period in which Shōgun takes place. If you want to try making it yourself, here's the recipe.
Konpeitō
Ingredients :
20-30 Sugar crystals
150g sugar
100ml water
Food dye
Equipment
Non-stick pan
Matcha whisk
1. Make syrup. In a small pot, add water and sugar. Simmer over medium heat until the sugar has completely melted. Set aside
2. In...

럼 대신 뭘 놓고 해야돼요? 럼을 없으면 파닐라 맛하면 됄까요?
I'm totally trying this!❤
Pregnant with my 4th baby and, whilst we've always tried to have a small amount of dishes from all over (Japanese being our favourite!), I have extreme food aversions to everything except home-made ramen, tofu and plain rice. Hoping I can find some more dishes I can add into what I can eat by checking videos like these. Thank you for sharing!
😂😂🎉🎉
🎉🎉🎉
Rie, youre so down to earth and funny!!
I just throw it out on the grass in my garden
I am sure is good but don’t call it tiramisu
All this work in the morning?!
I just made myself THE most serious tiramisu. It tastes amazing!!! (I love matcha) But i think next time i want to add layers. One layer is not enough!
I'm going to try this at home...
They look like starbits from mario Galaxy
It's 2024 and Japanese Sando is a thing again; but after three videos, RUclips recommends Rie and ... lookit who did the whole thing at the right time for picanic sandos for the world to feel comforted. Zebras tho .... wth? Now I'm concerned = horses or not? If we can't ride them do they even horse?
its me again rie btw hello rie ❤❤❤ i sub to u🎉
Hai rie we are the same name !!❤❤❤
Personally I'd lightly roast the Broccoli in a frying pan to give the stew some more flavor otherwise the chicken stock, salt, pepper and maybe other spices would need to carry the flavour of the stew on their own but to each their own!
If you don't have mascarpone, add a bit of room-temperature cream cheese and a couple table spoons of Greek yogurt or sour cream!
What a wonderful video. So clearly explained. Thank you.
You are so cute!
Star bits from Super Mario Galaxy series was based on this cute candy.
I really would love to see more traditional Japanese meals 🙂
Wonderful culture
めちゃめちゃ美味しいそう!ありがとうりえ先生!クックブックおめでとう!買ってレシピ全部試してみたい!
You sure are a nice mom! My would have beat my ass if I spit out freshly baked goods she just helped me make. I’m aware that is pretty extreme but I think most parents probably would have done a bit more scolding for that. You’re a super nice mom!
I've just tried this recipe and It's sooo good. However I add a little nutmeg and garlic for taste
down the line, this cookbook is amazing, I've made a few of the recipes, and I'm opening up my family to other culture's foods, without ordering fast food or anything, since we don't have too many local small businesses around anymore
Making candy IS hard. It’s the hardest thing to cook for me, it’s hot and it’s so sensitive to so many different things.
Woah these look so much like a real life version of the super Mario Galaxy star bits
Now we can taste what lumas eat
I think the main difference is that Japanese breakfast is a lot lot healthier
These are my favorite candy!!! Absolutely perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth.
I guess the portuguese word for little sweets , "confeito", confetti in italian, came from these konpeitő
I have been looking for cookbooks that explore regions through the lens of home style food!
Lavender sounds delicious! I would make jasmine flavored ones. ^.^
Bristles?!
Myself and my husband have been craving this since being back home after being in Japan, so I'll be making this on the weekend. Thank you for your video ❤
Can you just use whipped cream from the store?
Isnt this just like rock candy but tiny
I saw you on Tasty and fell in love with your recipe. I went immediately to Amazon and bought your book. So happy to learn something new. I can not have gluten so I am excited to learn from you. Good luck, and thank you.
Imaginary water 😅🩷
I am living in Okinawa and now prefer Japanese breakfast over American breakfast. I don’t cook fish very well but I do eat rolled omelette, miso, natto, tofu or abrage ,and vegetables like gobo, bitter melon, or pickled vegetables
I feel like I recognize Konpeito from a Ghibli movie, but I can't remember which one offhand.
We have this sorta sugar in india given in temples 😅 this is nostalgic.
The real question is not who looked at a sea urchin and asked is that going to taste good? The real question is who looked at an oyster and said that looks like food, were they drunk? Was it a dare?
Wonderful video, but the music is much too loud. I want to hear Rie explain her process!
You're so charming and cute, that made me smile on a hard days work. Cant wait to make this myself.
After going to Japan in 2019, I have been obsessed with the breakfast. Thanks for the video!
haha! this was a really cute and informative video. I always felt konpeito is a simple and boring candy. I have a lot more respect now that I know how they are made. It's probably something you'll do once for fun... then not do again :p
I feel like you might have been able to do it a bit faster if you had a separate pot of simple sugar already up to temp, and ladle it onto the cores directly from the heated pot. Youd need a candy thermometer to keep it the right temperature but it would get rid of the time spent heating up each ladle of syrup every time.
I remember collecting these in Super Mario Galaxy
Being honest, just from a historical standpoint the sengoku jidai and alot of historical Japanese politics can be very interesting
